Tina wants justice for George Floyd, and justice includes accountability for all the officers who were involved in his murder. Tina also says we need to face up to the disparities in opportunity that hurt Black, Brown and Indigenous people every day, and we need to use this moment to take action.
Tina immediately called for the police officers involved in George Floyd’s murder to be charged, and she supported the decision to turn over the investigation to Minnesota Attorney General, Keith Ellison. Tina, along with other Minnesota lawmakers, called for investigations at the federal, state, and local levels into George Floyd’s death.
Tina led over 20 of her colleagues to push the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice (DOJ) to conduct an investigation into the patterns and practices of racially discriminatory and violent policing in the Minnesota Police Department (MPD).
And now, after meeting with community members and taking time to listen to those closest to the work needed to help communities in Minnesota and across the country, Tina is taking legislative action. She supports national chokehold ban legislation, and a number of measures focused on accountability and independent investigations.
Tina supports a resolution introduced by her Senate colleague Kamala Harris condemning police brutality, a bill led by Senator Tammy Duckworth focused on using independent prosecutors, and Tina worked with Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker on legislation to transform policing. The bill would create a federal use of force standard and a national registry of police misconduct, and it lays out steps our nation needs to take in order to reimagine policing so that we prevent police violence and injustice.
